OUR MISSION AT NEW LENS URBAN MENTORING SOCIETY IS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR BLACK MALES BY PROVIDING CULTURALLY-CONGRUENT, MULTI-GENERATIONAL MENTORING TO ADDRESS MENTAL. PHYSICAL, AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT.
"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men."
Due to the New Lens’ partnership with Outward Bound Voyageur School the mentees are able to participate in the New Lens’ Spring Break Experience. This three day experience is set to build the mentees skills in leadership, teamwork, and responsibility while teaching them necessary wildlife techniques. Also, this experience is to prep the mentees for New Lens’ Annual Canoeing and Hiking Experiences.
Since the conception of New Lens we have had a strong hold on the schools on the eastside of St. Paul and Washington Technology Magnet School is one of them. In this in-school session our program coordinators discussed with the mentees about perception and how you are perceived in the world can effect your life and the opportunities you have in the future.
New Lens is a part of a exclusive group of community partners that are able to go into schools and directly impact students. New Lens takes these in-school experiences very seriously when it comes to their mentees and makes sure that each mentee receives the necessary attention that exposes them to the Big Five.
New Lens is fortunate to be a part of this years’ Leader United cohort provided by Greater Twin Cities United Way. By being apart of this program New Lens will be able to excel to new heights and be able to continue giving each of their mentees innovative experiences that will increase their exposure to the Big Five.
Based on the Big Five that was created by New Lens, Adaptability, is one of the most important aspects of the Big Five. Adaptability, is the translation and articulation of self across environmental and social cultures from place of cultural rootedness.
Harding High School has been a long partner with New Lens. The mentees have been responding to the Big Five extremely well and we can see the improvements not only in school but outside of school. New Lens has been extremely happy about the partnership with Harding High School and can't wait for more incredible things to come with our partnership.

As you all may know, New Lens is focused on the non-cognitive development and social emotional learning of our young Black males. From an extensive evaluation done on our organization it has resulted in the fruition of the “Big Five.” This “Big Five” consists of 5 non-cognitive factors that are foundational to the whole organizational framework and influential to our programmatic activities.

New Lens’ mentees enjoy that they have access to more activities outside of New Lens’ weekly Saturday Activities by engaging in New Lens’ after school program. For this semester’s after school program activity the New Lens’ mentees will be participating in fencing thanks to New Lens’ partnership with Minnesota Sword Club.
